Tobacco Use and Other Negative Effects Upon Health

Regular smoking and use of smokeless tobacco create nicotine addiction.

Additionally, there are a number of other negative health effects caused by smoking specifically. Smoking and exposure to secondhand and thirdhand smoke:

  • Are a major cause of cardiovascular disease and cause one of every three deaths from cardiovascular disease.
  • Are a major cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cause an estimated 80% of COPD-related deaths.
  • Cause decreased fertility, and increased risk of pregnancy complications. Some studies have found a link between smoking during pregnancy and tissue damage in the unborn baby, and between smoking/secondhand smoke and miscarriage.
  • Reduce life expectancy by more than 10 years for those who smoke compared to nonsmokers.
  • Affect children and pets.9
