On Your First Visit

Your first few visits to CancerCare Manitoba may take several hours. We suggest you bring a friend or a book to help you pass the time.

On your first visit, you will meet the Radiation Oncologist and Nurse who will be caring for you. A Radiation Oncologist is a doctor who has specialized in the field of radiation therapy. You may also meet a Radiation Oncology resident.

The nurse will ask you to complete a "Self Report Health History". The doctor will review your history, examine you, and possibly order further tests.

The plans for your treatment and any possible side effects will be discussed with you. When you arrive for care, the communication clerk will direct you where to go.

Clinical Trials

Your doctor may ask you if you are interested in participating in a clinical trial.

A clinical trial is done to compare a new method of treatment to the current method of treatment. Clinical trials only involve treatments that will provide good quality care. Your doctor will discuss the details with you. You will be given the opportunity to discuss with your family and family physician, if you choose, before making your decision.
