Job Summary:

Reporting to the Manager, Cancer Registry, the incumbent participates in the collection, abstraction, utilization and analysis of complex medical data for the Provincial Cancer Registry; accurately encodes all related cancer data from cytology, pathology, autopsy reports, report of malignant neoplasms, admission/separation data from the provincial hospital abstracting system, vital statistics death listings, hospital and clinic charts to be recorded in the computerized cancer registry data base; and performs edits and quality checks on data. The Cancer Registrar I position performs a variety of roles including Pathology processing, Admission & Separation process, Vital Statistics processing, Consults/Referral form processing, non-reportable disease coding, and entering "pending" diagnosis for rapid case ascertainment. A Cancer Registrar I may be called upon to perform any or all of these duties, and works closely with the Senior Registrar in performing many of these tasks. The roles in this position prepare the Cancer Registrar I for more detailed and technical tasks required by a Cancer Registrar II.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Health Information Management Certificate or equivalent health information course
  • Formal education knowledge of ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition) coding system
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
  • Excellent oral/written communication and organizational skills
Will be assessed during the testing process:
  • Proficient in medical terminology (70% pass rate)

Preferred:
  • Experience working in a Cancer Registry
  • Working knowledge of SNOP (Systematized Nomenclature of Pathology), ICD-O (International Classification of Diseases for Oncology), ICD9CM (International Classification of Diseases Clinical Modification) coding systems
  • Working knowledge of SEER (Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results Program) Multiple Primary and Histology Coding Rules


Asset:
  • Experience in MAXON(+) computer system
  • Experience in Varian Medical Systems Manager
  • Experience in Enterprise Viewer/Client Registry software
  • Eligible for Certified Tumour Registrar (CTR) National Certification Examination

Comments:
