Job Summary:

Our Urgent Oncology Care Clinic and a Cancer Helpline at CCMB's MacCharles Site assists patients with cancer related symptoms and complications or side effects from their treatment. The clinic will be open weekdays (8:00 AM - 6:00 PM).

The Oncology Nurse III is responsible for the provision of holistic cancer care and assisting in the management of cancer patients requiring unplanned care/treatment in the ambulatory urgent care clinic setting. The nurse will participate in the Cancer Hotline telephone service providing standardized telephone triage to assist patients to safely manage their symptoms at home or determine whether they require face to face assessment. The oncology nurse integrates and applies critical thinking and knowledge of standardized ED and Helpline triage tools, cancer pathophysiology, disease progression, treatment side effects, complications, symptom problems and treatment modalities in the management of oncologic emergencies. The oncology nurse facilitates inter-professional communication and teamwork in an acute situation to assess the changing needs of the patient, plans, implement treatments, and evaluates the outcomes. The incumbent must be available to work a variable schedule. Nursing staff work with cytotoxic and hazardous medications on a regular basis. Personal protective equipment (PPE) and training are provided.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Current registration with College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM)
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
  • Minimal three (3) years' experience within settings such as medical/surgical or ambulatory care
  • Strong critical problem solving, decision making, and quick intervention skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Strong understanding of patient-centered care
  • Proficient with MS Word/Excel/Outlook and internet use
  • Satisfactory employment record


Preferred:
  • Bachelor of Nursing
  • Experience in critical/emergency settings
  • Knowledge and experience with oncology
  • Experience with electronic charting


Asset:
  • Certified Oncology Nurse [CON(C)]
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Leadership and self-development

Salary: As per MNU Collective Agreement
